VHAI in collaboration with Voluntary Health Association of India – Aparajita successfully released the findings of the AQM Study in Orissa on 22nd December, 2009 at Hotel New Marrion, Bhubaneswar
The study was released in a press conference amidst presence of over 25 - 30 journalists, both from the print and electronic media.
The programme was attended by Member Secretary Odisha State Pollution Control Board Siddhant Das, Member, MD Hemlata Hospital and Cancer Institute Dr. AK Rath, Enviromentalist Prof. Nityananda Sahu, VHAI’s Senior Manager Shisir Ranjan Dash and Itishree Kanungo.
Mr Siddhant Das responded to the study findings and said that it is now very important to create awareness among people about the air quality and smoke free law among the people of Bhubaneswar so that this can improve the quality of air both indoor and outdoor.
Dr A.K. Rath explained the impact of smoke on human health and explained the health hazard that can be caused due to second hand smoke. He suggested to make the scientific findings reach the common people.
Prof. Nityananda Sahu said that the role of celebrities as role models of youth is very crucial in making the smoke free drive successful.
Mr Shisir Ranjan Dash, VHAI said that it is very important for the managers of the hotels, bars and restaurants to ensure safe air for their customer in the premise. The customers should also demand for a smoke free environment from where he/she is buying services from.
All the mainstream publications of Orissa The Times of India, The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Statesman and The Pioneer carried the stories informing that over 75 percent of the bar-cum-restaurants surveyed across the Bhubaneswar City are flouting the smoke free law according to AQM study conducted by Voluntary Health Association of India.
Apart from the print media, the prominent TV channels of Bhubaneswar also highlighted the event in their news headlines.
